Gola Profiles
Handle-less door and drawer system with automatic routing calculations for modern kitchen design
Overview
Gola profiles (also known as "J-pull" or "grip-ledge" profiles) are a handle-less door/drawer system popular in modern kitchen design. Instead of traditional handles, a recessed channel allows fingers to grip the edge of a door or drawer front.
Cabinet Planner automatically calculates routing dimensions and generates the gola profile specifications for manufacturing.
Types of Gola Profiles
Used for drawers and horizontal pull access:
- Creates a horizontal channel along the top edge of drawers
- Top drawer: Uses an L-profile (open at the top)
- Middle/lower drawers: Uses C-profiles (channel on both sides)
- Routing dimensions are calculated based on drawer height and position
- Common in modern kitchens for a sleek, handle-less look
Used for doors with side-pull access:
- Creates a vertical channel along one side of a door
- Uses L-profiles on left or right side
- Full-height notch routing for the profile channel
- Creates a seamless, minimalist door appearance
How Gola Routing Works
Horizontal Gola Calculation
- The system determines the number of drawers
- Top drawer gets an L-profile with specific routing measurements
- Middle drawers (if any) get C-profiles with different routing
- All routing measurements account for material thickness and tolerances
- Profile lengths match drawer front widths
Vertical Gola Calculation
- The system calculates the full door height
- L-profile is positioned on the hinge-opposite side
- A full-height notch is routed into the door edge
- Profile length matches the door height
- Routing depth accommodates the standard gola profile dimensions
Measurements & Specifications
Gola routing generates precise measurements for:
- Profile type — L-profile or C-profile
- Profile length — In millimeters
- Routing depth — How deep to route the channel
- Routing width — Width of the routing channel
- Position — Where on the panel to route
These measurements appear in:
- The cut list panel in the editor
- CSV export files
- PDF manufacturing reports (with visual diagrams)
Enabling Gola Profiles
- Select a cabinet in the editor
- Ensure the front type is set to doors or drawers
- Open the Gola Profile settings
- Choose Horizontal or Vertical gola
- The system automatically calculates all routing specifications
Configurable Profile Dimensions
Gola profile dimensions can be customised in the Global Settings panel (visible when no cabinet is selected). This allows you to match the exact specifications of your physical gola profiles from any manufacturer.
There are four configurable values, separated by profile type:
Used at the top of the first drawer (horizontal) or on the door side (vertical):
- Width — The face dimension of the profile in mm (default: 35). Controls how much front height the profile occupies in horizontal mode.
- Depth — How far the profile recedes into the cabinet in mm (default: 20). In vertical mode, the side panel depth is reduced by this amount.
Used between multiple drawers in horizontal gola mode:
- Width — The face dimension of the profile in mm (default: 35). Controls how much front height each inter-drawer profile occupies.
- Depth — How far the profile recedes into the cabinet in mm (default: 20).
Compatibility
- Horizontal gola — Works with drawer fronts (1 or more drawers)
- Vertical gola — Works with single and double doors
- No front — Gola not applicable (no doors/drawers to route)
- Can be enabled/disabled per individual cabinet
Tips
- Horizontal gola is most popular for base cabinet drawers
- Vertical gola works well for tall/full-height cabinets
- Set your gola profile dimensions in the Global Settings panel to match your supplier's specifications
- Standard gola profiles are widely available from hardware suppliers
- Consider the visual alignment of gola channels across adjacent cabinets
